A man who at a starting price of 509k at the start of 2018 I was tempted to pick as a POD, now comes in at a huge discount at 297k in 2019 after suffering a heart problem that limited Roberton to just 4 games last year. Scrolling through the elites team picker, I could not believe how much of a discount he had gotten, however even at his price he does present a lot of risk to be considered also.

  • With an average of 92.6 in 2017, 76.4 in 2016 and 90.2 in 2015, he has proven that he is a reliable scoring option at a higher price let alone at sub 300k.

  • Potential Supercoach friendly role, rebounding defender who can use the ball by foot, which is what the Saints really lacked last season.

  • 3:1 kick to handball ratio in 2017.

  • In terms of defenders between 200-350k, Roberton is the only real midpricer worth looking at.

  • 210k discount on last years price (I’m still not sure how).

  • Potential to fly under the radar as a midpricer in terms of ownership in round 1.

  • Missed most of last year with a heart scare, and has since been on a modified program during the preseason.

  • Depending on his role upon return to the side, Roberton may require be utilised in a shutdown role occasionally.

  • Mature age recruits Nick Hind and Callum Wilkie both rebounding defenders who averaged high disposal counts outside the AFL. One would think St Kilda didn’t get two mature age defenders to sit on the pine…

Personally, I think there is plenty to like about Roberton this season, and I strongly believe that with the right role and a good preseason he could present great value at 297k. Will I be picking him? Not at this stage, but one who will be very closely watched over the preseason and JLT games.

Midpricer Rating: 8.5/10
